5 Quick Tips for Disease Prevention

OK, all of us at Brigham City Community Hospital respect your time. So here are the five tips to prevent disease— nice and fast, no beating around the bush.

  1. Stop (or never start) smoking
  2. Exercise regularly
  3. Eat a balanced and healthy diet
  4. Wear sunscreen
  5. Manage your stress

There. Not so hard right?

Yeah right. Most of already know that all of the above will help you stay in good health. But do you know how really, very important all of it actually is?

  1. Smoking GREATLY increases your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – emphysema and other conditions), hypertension, asthma, macular degeneration and even gum disease. This ONE SINGLE habit can destroy your health like Godzilla takes to a city. Quit.
  2. Regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. It’s been proven over and over again.
  3. Sixty-three percent of all deaths globally in 2008 were due to non-communicable chronic diseases and conditions according to the World Health Organization. These diseases include: certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes type 2. Poor diets are major contributory factors in all of them.
  4. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and it is very deadly. The simple, appropriate application of sunscreen can reduce the chance of you getting it. Why wouldn’t you use it?
  5. Stress is a killer in and of itself. But stress also helps disease take hold of your body. Everyone has stress, but it’s all about how you manage it. How can you possibly get this under control? Well what about starting with a simple hug? It works! And here are some more great tips.

Lastly, don’t forget that a regular check up with your family physician will also help prevent disease.
